A total of 279,000 claims have been filed over the past few weeks are due to the after affects of hurricane Katrina, which include 60,000 last week and a revised 108,000 claims filed two weeks ago, a figure that had originally been put at 103,000 claims. In the first two weeks after the storm hit, claims had totaled 20,000 and 91,000. Survey Sez

HRmarketer.com released its latest HRintelligence Trend Report identifying the companies and topics receiving the most media attention in the month of August, as well as the top advertisers and the overall health of the human capital marketplace.

The
HRmarketer Trend Report downgraded its rating from "Great" to "Good" because there was not enough compelling growth news in the HR marketplace to keep the rating at "Great" – as it has for the last five months. The consensus among dozens of HR suppliers is that sales are good but flat.

However, HRmarketer remains "bullish" on the space. In the just over three years of providing the industry's only online marketing and PR service for HR service providers, August was the fourth best ever month of new sales for HRmarketer, which indicates HR suppliers are feeling optimistic and confident about the marketplace and are investing more in their marketing and PR efforts.

Companies receiving the most media attention in the human resource industry trades during August included Aon, Employee Benefit Research Institute, Hewitt Associates, IBM, Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Motorola, National Business Group on Health, SHRM, and Watson Wyatt.

Top advertisers in the HR trades for August were Aetna, Aflac, Employease, LA Times, MetLife, Private Healthcare Systems, Recruitmax, SPECTRUM Human Resource Systems, and Visa.

Human resource topics receiving significant coverage across the HR trades in August included health care costs and how employees are carrying more of the burden; the challenges companies face that provide retirement plans; the value of high-performance learning organizations; investing in HR infrastructure; and the importance of recruiting, hiring and retaining top talent.

You Should Know

Global:

  •  Analysts said that search leader Google is quietly moving to add classified ads to its index. Google has been contacting publishers of Web-based classified advertising sites, requesting a direct feed of listings, according to Classified Intelligence, a research firm focused on the industry. Recruitment site CareerBuilder is in discussions with Google, analyst John Zappe wrote in a research note on Tuesday, while Adicio, a provider of software that powers newspaper job sites, told Zappe that it was working with its affiliates to determine a response to Google's request. (InternetNews)

  • Classified sites have to weigh the benefits of gaining a larger audience against the potential negative impact of losing control, wrote Nathan Weinberg in a blog on the InsideGoogle Web site. "If Google has a feed of all the major listing sites, and grabs more traffic than they do, then it can start its own listing service and cut off the rest of them at the knees," he writes. "Google can't compete with established, massive classified sites, unless those sites are shooting themselves in the foot every day with a crappy user experience." (News.com)

New Zealand:
  • The greying of the New Zealand worker continues, with the median age of the labour force projected to increase to 42 by 2012.  Statistics New Zealand said yesterday that the median was 39 in 2001. (New Zealand Herald)

South Africa:
  • In revised five-year statistics released in its latest Labour Force Survey on Monday, Statistics South Africa said the official unemployment rate increased from 25,4 percent in September 2000 to a peak of 31,2 percent in March 2003, before starting to drop. (IOL)

UK:
  • The migration of print advertising to the internet hit Emap yesterday after the media group warned of a 30% decline in advertising sales at Nursing Times. The owner of the Magic radio stations and Heat magazine said recruitment advertising at one of its biggest public-sector titles had been hit by tighter budgets at the NHS and the launch of NHSjobs.com, a free website for healthcare professionals. (Guardian)

US:
  • Personnel reforms in the Defense and Homeland Security departments will happen, and managers and employees need to learn from reforms already in place at some agencies, Sen. George D. Voinovich, R-Ohio told a Senate subcommittee hearing Tuesday. "We're going forward with this, there's no question about it," said Voinovich, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce and the District of Columbia. DHS plans to start the pay-for-performance portion of its system in January 2008; Defense plans to finalize regulations this fall for a similar system. The Bush administration is proposing to extend parts of these reforms to all agencies, although no bill has been introduced in Congress yet. (GovExec)

  • "Human capital" is one reason state policy might be even more important to our lives than federal policy. Economist Gary Becker, a Nobel Memorial Prize winner, calls human capital the most important form of wealth in the United States, and the Milken Institute estimates its value at $900 trillion. A look at what comprises human capital suggests a fascinating question: Which policies have a greater impact on human capital — national, or state and local? (Mackinac Center)

  • U.S. manufacturers had an easier time recruiting workers to fill key positions in September, but the growth in compensation for new hires slowed, according to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations. (HR.BLR)

  • In 2003, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich put on pearl earrings and a blazer and went ``undercover'' to find a job in corporate America.  She disguised her identity by obtaining a Social Security card in her maiden name, Barbara Alexander; she retooled her resume to eliminate deadly employment gaps; she erased any hints of a job history pre-1989 to appear younger and stressed her skills as a ``seasoned professional.''  Ehrenreich's futile yearlong search for a public relations job is chronicled in ``Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream'' (Metropolitan Books, 237 pages, $24) -- a highly readable chronicle of the plight of downwardly mobile, middle-class professionals who did everything right and still can't get work. (Bloomberg)

Zimbabwe:
  • Professionals Zimbabwe can ill afford to lose are emigrating for better salaries and opportunities, and their economic concerns must be addressed if the brain drain is to be stopped, researchers said in a new report. The Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Center based its conclusions, published Tuesday in the state-run Herald newspaper, on 479,348 questionnaires completed by Zimbabweans living abroad. It said it sent out more than 1 million questionnaires, but many refused to respond for fear their status as illegal workers in South Africa, Britain and elsewhere would be revealed. (CNN)
