Sexual harassment is a major issue for businesses. Studies show that between 40 percent and 60 percent of women have experienced sexually harassing behaviors, and these women suffer distressing consequences – low job satisfaction, psychological distress, anxiety, and depression. The behavior has also been shown to contribute to job loss, career interruption, increased turnover, and absenteeism. Still, as much as we know about how sexual harassment affects its victims, little is known about its impact on how the entire team performs when sexual harassment is taking place.  Professors Jana Raver of Queen's School of Business in Ontario, Canada, and Michele Gelfand of the University of Maryland delve into this relationship in a new study. Veritude's Workforce Insights spoke with Professor Raver about the study findings and what HR professionals can do to prevent sexual harassment in their organizations.

On October 3, Webhire will introduce a new service that enables recruiters and HR execs to target passive candidates through context-based online placements.  Ads are served directly to internet users who are interested in a particular field or technology, not simply pasted on job boards or Craig's List.  A number of Webhire clients have beta tested the service and have realized very positive results.

Adicio, a developer of Web-based job-board solutions, has said that its CareerCast National Network has added several prominent daily newspaper affiliates, including The New York Times and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Established in 2002, the CareerCast National Network offers recruiting professionals the ability to post job opportunities into both the local database of each participating affiliate career site, as well as into the CareerCast National Network database, which candidates see as a secondary search result every time they conduct a job search at any participating affiliate career site.

Brands will support with games, samples, and product showcases and demos. The 2005 tour, created and managed by Alloy Media + Marketing, New York, runs six weeks beginning Sept. 29; its bus will hit about 15 campuses. The initiative aims to increase the cable channel's awareness among students and give sponsors the chance to connect with the collegiate crowd at college football games and social environments, such as fraternities and bars. mtvU will air tour-related segments starting Oct. 10. Alloy's AMP agency will support with campus media and buzz squads.

Knowledge Infusion, a strategic consulting organization dedicated to helping organizations realize the value of HCM and learning technologies,   announced its Human Capital Management (HCM) StrategyMap. This packaged service helps companies plan and optimize their HCM technology investments.

Jobster has launched a service that allows active jobseekers to look for jobs across the web in one click and get referrals directly to the hiring teams of leading companies.  With Jobster Search recruiters can now pre-qualify active jobseekers because inquiring candidates can proactively provide hiring teams with referrals from inside the company.

Job seeker mistakes make typical searches last 4-6 months. For those displaced by Hurricane Katrina, that could mean the difference between rebuilding their lives and spiraling downward. As challenging as it may be, unemployed Katrina victims need to move fast, but not panic. Putting food on the table and getting some stability is certainly a priority. But taking a dead-end or ill-fitting job out of desperation can add to the frustration the disaster has caused many families. The lifetime cost can be staggering as well. A newly published report by job search expert Roy Miller of website http://www.Job-Search-Guidepost.com shows the potentially staggering lifetime cost of conducting job searches the typical way. Miller says, "Most people never think about the cost of job search delay. Posting a resume online and waiting for the phone to ring doesn't get it done anymore. And if Katrina left you out of work, you need to go beyond that quickly."

Millions of businesses throughout the United States have websites, and when it comes to regular website maintenance, many run into trouble. Even a simple text change is almost always too difficult for a non-programmer.

A new online service from Edit.com gives business owners the control they are looking for. The service includes "Do-It-Yourself Editing" so businesses can make most site updates quickly and easily themselves and "Custom Work Services" for reliable advice and expert execution on advanced updates. Edit.com takes the guesswork out of website maintenance and empowers business owners.

Edit.com is Different.
Edit.com is an online service that works with any existing website to give the website owner the ability to quickly and easily change text, links, images, PayPal and even add new pages. Unlike anything else in the market, Edit.com automatically protects the site structure, doesn't require any software, automatically customizes to the site (styles, fonts, layout), shows the changes exactly as they will display live on the Internet and includes training and personalized support for any website related questions. Customers do not need to learn anything, install anything, configure anything or change anything about their site design or hosting. They simply sign up at Edit.com and schedule a 15 minute phone orientation.

Do-It-Yourself Editing Service
To update their site, customers sign-in at Edit.com and then browse their site and type updates directly into their web pages - all from within their web browser. A demo movie of the editing service is located at www.edit.com/demo. By making only certain parts of each page editable, Edit.com protects the site design and functionality from damage.

Custom Work Service
Many business owners do not have a reliable web developer and most developers would prefer to focus on website design rather than maintenance. Edit.com provides free custom work quotes for maintenance needs that require an expert web developer such as adding or adjusting ecommerce, newsletter subscriptions, databases or revising the site structure and layout. Each quote includes a fixed price, timeline and straightforward explanation of what is involved.

Edit.com service plans start at $25 and are available at www.edit.com or by calling (877) 387-2549.

  • Social networking technology helps connect friends, business partners and others using a variety of tools such as search and data mining.  Ocken's firm, Kindred Partners, deployed Visible Path to enable its employees to gain access to a network of professionals who have relationships with other Kindred Partners staffers. Through this "trusted relationship network," Ocken, who is managing director at the executive search firm, found the name of a co-worker who knew the CIO he was trying to reach. That connection helped him get through. "The return rates on cold calls are exceptionally low, but the likelihood of the individual calling you back if it's a warm call [meaning someone has given you an introduction to the person you are calling] is dramatically higher," says Ocken.  (ComputerWorldAustralia)

Websites such as Jobster are becoming the business equivalent of social networking sites such as Friendster. (Fairfax Digital)

  • Sourcing is the buzzword of the current recruiting generation. Large companies are racing to set up central sourcing models. Smaller and mid-sized companies are examining more logical ways to divide labor among the members of their recruiting team. What have other leading companies learned in their own efforts to do this? What's worked, what's failed, and what can you do to ensure success?  (Lefkow on ERExchange)

  • Where to begin? My first foray into the world of job searching, undertaken at my computer on a gloomy December afternoon, is distinctly intimidating. These days, I have gathered from a quick tour of relevant web sites, you don't just pore over the help-wanted ads, send off some résumés, and wait for the calls. Job searching has become, if not a science, a technology so complex that no mere job seeker can expect to master it alone. (Alternet)

  • At the end of each of his players' junior years, Georgetown Preparatory High School head coach Dan Paro sits his players down and has them list 15 schools they're interested in. He contacts the schools' coaches and sends them highlight videos of the respective players. The work Paro does is extensive, but it could all be undone by some overzealous writer for a college football recruiting Web site, he says.  Sites such as Rivals.com have been around since 1998, evaluating players and giving fans and college coaches up-to-date information on prospects' college decisions. The sites provide video, statistics and vital information such as height, weight and 40-yard dash times. But recently, some of these information centers have turned into a blitz for the latest news on high school athletes, Paro said. (DOSports)
