Florida:
- With construction booming and the economy firing on all cylinders, Florida's August unemployment rate was the lowest ever recorded - and state records go back to 1976. The seasonally adjusted rate of 3.6 percent is a full percentage point lower than the rate one year ago. It also is well below the
national rate of 4.9 percent. "It's getting extremely hard to find people to fill jobs and employee retention is really becoming an issue," said Brent Short, a manager in west central Florida for the staffing company Spherion Corp. He said the company is having difficulty filling positions in technology,
accounting and finance, customer service and call center support. (St. Petersburg Times)

- The tasks of putting together and restocking top-drawer finance teams can present busy CFOs with a daunting question: How much time and effort can I put into picking talent? The answer most often must be an unhappily expressed version of "not much." While
hiring excellent subordinates is obviously the most basic task of a finance chief, many don't have the time to spend on the task. Thus, it ends up being delegated to executive-recruitment firms. But the story doesn't — or shouldn't — end there, experts suggest. By expending some effort in hiring a
headhunter, senior finance executives can save themselves the considerable grief and expense that often arises when hires go awry. Says Wine.com CFO John Belchers: "The cost of making a [hiring] mistake is a lot more than the cost of a recruiter." (CFO.com)
- Police said online job hunters should be on the lookout for a scam that promises a paycheck but could leave them in the red, News 5's Juliette Vara reported. A fake overseas company claims it will hire the victims to send out payroll to its employees. The
scammers target people who post their resume on sites such as Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com, Vara reported. (ChannelCincinatti)
- Troubling Exits At Microsoft Once the dream workplace of tech's highest achievers, it is suffering key defections to Google and elsewhere. What's behind the losses?
When Microsoft Corp. (MFST ) hired computer scientist Kai-Fu Lee away from hardware maker Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI ) in 1998, the move underscored how thoroughly the software giant dominated the computer industry. Not only did it monopolize PC operating systems and hold an edge in Web browsers, but
it was also vacuuming up the world's brightest technologists. Lee's expertise was in speech recognition, considered one of the next big leaps in computing. With people like him flocking to Microsoft's labs, it seemed that the digital world's reigning champion had a lock on the future. (BusinessWeek)

Maryland:
- The Sallie Mae Student Loan Rebate Program is a program that would give qualified teachers and nurse's incentives, after graduation, to stay and teach in the state of Maryland. The governor's office and Sallie Mae representatives announced the program.
Under the program, any student who receives a college student loan through Sallie Mae or a lender affiliated with Sallie Mae could receive 10 percent of their loan amount back in cash or as a reduction in principal after making 36 regular payments and completing three years of employment in the nursing
field or teaching in Maryland. (Baltimore Times)
Minnesota:
- The impending shortage of skilled workers has the local leaders of economic development concerned.
"It's a waste of time trying to drum up business to come here if we don't have workers for them," said Mike Fay, vice president of the Hibbing Economic Development Authority (HEDA). "We need to determine what role we can play in training and developing a skilled workforce. I don't see us as taking the
lead, but we can have a role as a support. (The Daily Tribune)
Missouri:
- Missouri's tourism industry has taken steps to assist displaced hospitality industry workers who have been evacuated from the Gulf Coast following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Missouri Travel Council, Missouri's largest travel industry
association, is encouraging hospitality industry employers to utilize its Web site to list job openings free of charge. The job posting page is normally available exclusively to Missouri Travel Council members, however with the
arrival of hurricane evacuees in the Show-Me State, association leaders have waived the membership requirement in order to make the service available to all travel industry employers. (St. Louis Chinese American News)

US:
- Jobster Chief Executive Jason Goldberg started his blog late last year as a way to record his entrepreneurial adventure, though the blog has morphed in recent months into a broader discussion of the online recruiting industry. On many days, he said, the Jobster blog receives twice as many visitors as
the company's home page. "It is fresh news and content is still king," Goldberg said, adding that the blog occasionally attracts as many as 5,000 visitors in a day. "When there is new content, people come back to read." Goldberg said he views the blog as a personal conversation between him and the online
recruiting industry. His only rule: "If I wouldn't say it to a reporter, I wouldn't say it on my blog." (SeattlePI)
