Through the CAREERcapital(TM) and JOBspyder(TM) online career management applications, Happen, a national self-help support group for executives in transition, and Knightsbridge Human Capital Management are giving transitioning executives information they need to conduct a successful job search. JOBspyder(TM) scours Canadian Internet sites every day to search out job listings on online job boards and government, not-for-profit, recruiter, and private corporate web sites searching for job listings.

St. Joseph, Inc. (STJO) has  entered into a marketing agreement with Corporate Resource Services, Inc., a Professional Employer Organization (PEO).  "The preliminary groundwork for success began with the training of our sales and marketing team, initially targeting the sales, maintenance, and administration associated with the PEO business," stated Mr. John H. Simmons, President of St. Joseph, Inc. "We look forward to aggressively growing our organization, both organically and through future acquisitions."

Cornerstone OnDemand announced support for Bersin & Associates' recent report identifying integrated learning and performance management as an emerging trend in HR technology. Cornerstone OnDemand substantiates these research findings based on a 40% increase in demand from prospective clients for such integrated solutions over the last nine months of sales. "The market now recognizes the strategic advantages offered through integrated employee performance management and development. Our clients are already realizing the substantial returns of true talent management," said Adam Miller, President and CEO, Cornerstone OnDemand

Bersin & Associates recently completed a nine-month study that indicates demand for the integration of performance management and learning management technologies. Such integration forms the basis of an overall talent management system.

The Defense Department has renewed a contract with Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. for $106 million to continue providing information management support to the Joint Requirements and Integration Office (JRIO).  Under the five-year contract, Booz Allen will provide support to the undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness, hone requirements for the Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System (DIMHRS), and provide outreach and change management functions under the Business Management and Modernization Program (BMMP).

Utilizing a proprietary direct sourcing process, TalentFusion uncovers the best candidates that are not to be found on the Internet job boards. Australia:

  • Acting Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says the State Government is using every avenue possible to secure the best doctors for the state's hospitals. Premier Peter Beattie is launching a overseas drive in the United Kingdom and Ms Bligh says the new deal brokered for full-time doctors will help attract more specialists from interstate. (ABCNews)

Global:
  •  In August 2005, Yahoo! unveiled its "Next Generation of Yahoo! Local." One of the launch's most striking aspects was a newly revised sense of community and destination. It marked the rebirth of the city portal. (ClickZ)

  • In the same way that Google and Yahoo use the "below the sponsored link, above the top spot" space to showcase their vertical offerings such as Shopping, Weather, Local and News; Yahoo is taking this a step further with Instant Search (in certain situations). The next step of course would be bypassing the web results completely for such a search query and taking the user directly to the vertical offering results. Not too sure if users are ready for such a service yet though. (SearchEngineJournal)

Ireland:
  •  Irish employers are among the most optimistic in Europe about the future pace of hiring, a new survey shows. (BusinessWorld)

New Zealand:
  • A SHORTAGE of network security and internet telephony skills in the channel is preventing the industry from addressing all the opportunities available in the market, says Cisco Systems. The networking vendor says not enough people in the channel have the knowledge to design and implement networks based on its security and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technologies. (ResellerNews)

Malaysia:
  • THE most creative and innovative company in managing human capital will be awarded with the 5th National Human Resource Excellence Award on September 22 this year.  The ceremony will be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the guest of honour and attended by Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn, as well as 400 other invitees at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. (BusinessTimes)

  • Unemployed graduates have been urged to explore employment opportunities in the agricultural field so as to reduce the unemployment rate among graduates in the State.  State Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries, Japli Akim, said this was important given the rising number of unemployed graduates.  Japli, who is also State Umno Youth chief, advised graduates to change their perception towards job prospects in the agricultural sector.

"Unemployment among graduates will not be an issue if they are not choosy upon completing their studies." (DailyExpress)

Singapore:
  • It was an atypical job search.  Instead of job-seekers going to meet prospective employers, the employers came to them.

UK:
  •  Women part-time workers are still earning 40 per cent less per hour than men working full-time – the same pay gap as 30 years ago, a new report reveals.  But a year-long study by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) finds that the potential of both men and women is being left untapped by Britain's current working arrangements. More than 3.5 million of part-time workers have used higher qualifications or had more experience managing staff in previous jobs, it finds, while a further two million said they could "easily work at a higher level".  The EOC is now calling for "fresh, flexible thinking" about the nature of work itself, saying most businesses still operate with the "increasingly outdated" model where full-time is the norm from which part-timers deviate. (politics.co.uk)

  • Companies large and small share the same fear that a shortage of staff talent lies just around the corner. And the majority of businesses believe the most critical management issue they face in the medium term is attracting and retaining high- calibre workers. (eveningtimes)

  • "Figures released by the ONS for August show that the UK employment rate has risen to 74.8% in three months to July 2005. There has been no change in the UK unemployment rate which remains flat at 4.7 per cent, unchanged both over the previous quarter and the last year. The trend in both the employment and unemployment rates is flat," comments Alan Townsend, MD for Monster UK & Ireland. (OnRec)

  • How much does recruitment cost your company?

It won't be surprising to many Employers to know that, in the UK alone, there are in the region of 260,000 graduates searching for jobs this year and only 80,000 positions available. Research recently carried out by 1stopcareer.com has found that the average cost just to get one graduate through the door of your business can be as much as £30,000! (OneStopCareer)

  • Olympics could worsen skills shortage nationwide...The construction of the Olympic village could seriously disrupt efforts to hit the decent homes target across the country, the government was warned this week. A massive skills shortage of more than 15,000 construction workers is already threatening the north's effort. (InsideHousing)

US:
  • You can count on one hand the number of Harvard College alumni who've won the coveted MacArthur Foundation "genius" grants in the past five years. Ditto for Yalies. And there've been 119 winners. It's just one recent hint that attending an elite college may mean less than anxious applicants think it does. Another is a Harvard Business School analysis due out next month that finds the number of alumni from prestigious undergraduate schools declining among top business leaders. (Kentucky.com)

  • Now comes Barbara Ehrenreich to probe a deeper level of white-collar pain: men and women who lose or quit their corporate jobs and routinely spend months, even years, trying to find another. Bait and Switch is the logical sequel to Nickel and Dimed, her revelatory 2001 book about the blue-collar poor. (The Nation)

  • Under the "Basic Pilot Program," employers enter a person's name, birth date and other data on a website. The information is then run through databases maintained by the Social Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.  Employers never learn if the individual might be in the country illegally. They simply get a "yes" or "no" on the person's work status. Applicants can appeal if they disagree with the results. (Globe and Mail)

  • Nationally, the restaurant industry - known for its high turnover rate - is in a bind. The industry is expanding faster than the number of workers available, and people look for more high-paying jobs as the economy heats up.  The issue of hiring and retention has replaced food prices as the top worry for restaurateurs, said Hudson Riehle, senior researcher at the National Restaurant Association. In response, many local and national restaurants are offering new incentives - such as insurance, raises, and trips - to deal with competition for workers. (BillingsGazette)

  • The agencies rated by federal employees as the top five places to work in the government--the Office of Management and Budget, National Science Foundation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Government Accountability Office and Securities and Exchange Commission - all have fewer than 3,500 employees. The rankings of best agencies to work were issued Wednesday by the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization devoted to attracting people to work in government. (WorkforceWeek)
