Monster Employment Index

Online job recruitment activity and related employment opportunities increased in 24 of the top 28 U.S. metropolitan areas in August, according to the latest findings of the Monster Local Employment Index. Online demand for workers in sales; legal; business and financial; and administrative support areas surged in a majority of the markets tracked by the Index, suggesting a broad increase in business activity and expansion throughout much of the country at the outset of the fall hiring season.

The Minneapolis, San Diego and Seattle metro areas saw the sharpest month-to-month increases in online job availability in August, with demand rising a healthy four points in each market. Minneapolis and Seattle, in particular, continued three-month growth trends and have seen the largest rate of increase in online job demand since the Index's inception in May 2005.

Sales and related occupations represented the largest number of online job opportunities in August, with online demand for sales positions soaring in all but two of the metro areas tracked by the Index. Online demand for business and financial; legal; and office and administrative support workers was also strong across the majority of the markets tracked, suggesting a broad increase in business activity and expansion.

"The broad surge in demand for sales positions across the majority of the 28 metro areas indicates that businesses are becoming more confident in the strength of the economy and may be ramping up their expansion efforts for the remainder of the year and 2006. We will be closely monitoring how the impact of Hurricane Katrina affects online recruitment activity, especially in the South, over the course of the next few months,"  said Steve Pogorzelski, Group President, International.

Back-to-School Season Sees Higher Demand for Education-Related Workers While Hiring in Construction, Military Recruitment Continues Upward Trend

Online demand for education, training and library occupations also trended higher across most of the 28 markets tracked by the Index, reflecting stepped-up recruitment efforts in conjunction with the back-to-school season. While the majority of teacher positions have already been filled, schools, libraries and other educational-related organizations often need to continue recruiting additional staff for the new school year.

August also saw further growth in demand for construction-related and military specific occupations, reflecting the continued strength of the housing market and the active recruitment efforts of the U.S. armed forces. In another positive sign, online demand for production workers fell in just two of the markets, reflecting increased economic activity in the manufacturing sector, while transportation and material moving workers also saw increased job availability, likely due to the continued shortage of truck drivers in the U.S.

Overall results for the top 28 U.S. metro markets over the past four months are as follows:

About the Monster Local Employment Index

The Monster Local Employment Index is an extension of the national Monster Employment Index, which is based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from more than 1,500 Web sites, including Monster(R).  The Index counts job postings as an indicator of employer demand for employees or, in other words, job availability.  All of the data and findings have been validated for accuracy through independent, monthly third party auditing conducted by ARC Research of Cranford, New Jersey. More information about the Index is available at http://LocaleIndex.monsterworldwide.com.

You Should Know

Australia:

  • At a gala event held at the Sydney Hilton, Kelly Services won the Generalist Recruiter: Large category and Staff It won the Generalist Recruiter: Small to Medium category. Other winners included Hudson in the Executive Recruiter category, Greythorn in the IT Recruiter category and Xpand IT in the IT Recruiter: Small to Medium category.  This year two new categories were added to the awards, Favourite Niche Recruiter and Favourite Healthcare Recruiter. AAAI Group (Engineering) took out the Niche category and Kelly Scientific Resources won the Favourite Healthcare Recruiter award. (OnRec)

  • EXPANDING operations offshore is becoming an increasing trend among global banks and financial services companies, according to a new survey. Currently more than 80 per cent of financial companies conduct some form of offshore operation of their business activities, a survey by accounting from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has found. In three years' time, 94 per cent of financial companies expect to have some offshore. (The Australian)

Canada:
  • The idea is to recruit doctors into hospitals in smaller communities, something that's been tough to do. Dr. Mike Kolber practises at the Peace River Community Health Centre, where they've lost five of 11 doctors recently. The centre serves 15,000 people in the town, along with surrounding communities. And getting new doctors can be a grind.

"It's like recruiting for a hockey team," Kolber said. "The problem is there's not a lot of hockey players out there." (Edmonton Sun)

  • As the days begin to cool and the nights grow longer, HR staff know that salary survey season has started. This year's surveys predict that raises will be in the 3.2-3.4 per cent range next year. Canadian HR Reporter's full salary survey coverage will appear on Oct. 10 in print and online. Here are the other salary surveys. (Canadian HR Reporter)

Global:
  •  Most HR executives deny that differential treatment occurs. They say they treat everyone the same, that they're prepared to stand up to the boss if he's hurting the company and that they are willing to face the potential consequences of taking the high road. But observers, like Hoffman, find these statements unconvincing.

"You can't expect reliable information from people in vulnerable positions," he says. "They're just giving you the company line. All of us fear that if we say something in a power structure, they may retaliate and do something to us that we can't prove." Most managers, HR included, are reluctant to stand up to the boss, agrees John Warren, general counsel at the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in Austin, Texas. "It's hard to go to your boss and say, 'I know you're stealing.' You'll either be fired, transferred or smeared."  (CareerJournal)

  • Successful advertising has both an intellectual and an emotional impact. Said another way, it connects with both the left side of the brain, which is the seat of thought and logic, and the right side of the brain, which is the home to sensing and feeling. A good job posting, therefore, will include content that both:
    • supports a prospect's careful analysis of an organization's value proposition, and
    • stimulates the first stirrings of an emotional contact between the employer and the prospect.

It will explain why (a talented person) should consider your employer and motivate them to believe and be influenced by those facts. How does it do that? By following the age-old prescription for effective sales literature. That's precisely what a job posting is, after all; it's an electronic sales brochure. To do its job, therefore, it must detail the features and describe the benefits of your employer's value proposition. It must answer the two most important questions for top talent: What's in it for them? and Why should I bother? (CareerJournal)

  • A state judge, ruling in a case that exposed the behind-the-scenes animosity between two high-tech titans, said Tuesday that a former Microsoft Corp. executive may begin working at Google Inc. in a limited capacity.

Kai-Fu Lee remains barred from doing work on products, services or projects he worked on at Microsoft, including computer search technology, pending a trial set for January. King County Superior Court Judge Steven Gonzalez said a noncompete agreement Lee signed with Microsoft is valid. (Silicon Valley.com) (Jilted Ballmer Threatens Google's Life, Earns Restraining Order)

  • In a global survey, 69% of the 1396 human resources practitioners surveyed say attracting new talent poses the greatest threat to competitiveness, followed by the inability to retain key talent (66%) and incoming workers with inadequate skills (34%). These survey findings are underscored in a Deloitte research report, "It's 2008: do you know where your talent is? Why acquisition and retention strategies don't work."

"Deloitte's new research points to an inescapable conclusion: the widening skills gap is a global phenomenon, particularly among the categories of key workers who disproportionately drive an organisation's performance" said Ashley Unwin, a partner in consulting at Deloitte. "This trend will leave behind companies that do not begin to rethink their approach to talent management." (OnRec)

India:
  • Indian employers are expected to take on 6 per cent more staff on their payrolls during the fourth quarter of the current financial year compared with the third quarter, according to a survey carried out by Manpower Inc of the US. The survey reveals a very "buoyant hiring sentiment in India with an overall net employment outlook of 40 per cent, an increase of 6 percentage points from 34 per cent in the third quarter." (The Telegraph)

Ireland:
  •  Ireland's labour force has grown by record levels over the past year, according to figures published today by the Central Statistics Office. The CSO said the number of people either in work or seeking work had increased by almost 95,000 between June 2004 and June 2005, a rise of just under 5%. (IOL)

Louisiana:
  • State officials have a new worry as they try to help those displaced by Hurricane Katrina: job poaching. Homegrown companies are reconstituting in neighboring states -- bringing with them the jobs and taxes that had belonged to Louisiana. Entergy Corp., a New Orleans utility, has moved its headquarters to Clinton, Miss., taking over the former offices of WorldCom Inc. Blanchard & Co., the country's largest retailer of rare coins and precious metals, has relocated to Addison, Texas. Fabulous Pewterware, a New Orleans metal fabricator, has occupied almost 10,000 square feet of office space near Houston's Astrodome, where it was offered six months of free rent.

Many such actions are motivated by altruism. But Louisiana officials also see a "covert method of business recruitment," said Michael Olivier, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development. "We're only human, and we feel like they're taking advantage of the situation." (CareerJournal)

UK:
  • The Report on Jobs, published by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation and Deloitte, provides the most comprehensive guide to the UK labour market, drawing on original survey data provided by recruitment consultancies and employers, as well as data on national newspaper recruitment advertising. The latest Report on Jobs survey showed that the UK labour market continued to perform solidly in August. Recruitment consultancies reported a further increase in the number of people they placed in jobs, which they said reflected rising demand for staff at client companies. Candidate availability was moderately down, while growth of employee pay remained robust. (DeloitteUK)

  • The latest labour market figures show Northern Ireland currently has the highest number of employee jobs on record.
Seasonally adjusted figures from the Quarterly Employment Survey estimated that there were 692,960 employee jobs filled in June 2005, which represents a net increase of 1,040 over the quarter and an increase of 13,880 over the year. Nearly 70% of the annual increase in jobs was accounted for by a rise in full-time work. (4NI)

US:
  • Web users entering the words "miserable failure" into the popular search engine are directed to the biography of the president on the White House website. The trick is possible because Google searches more than just the contents of web pages - it also counts how often a site is linked to, and with what words. Thus, members of an online community can affect the results of Google searches - called "Google bombing" - by linking their sites to a chosen one. (BBC)

  • Citing the steep climb in gasoline prices, the Internal Revenue Service announced on Monday an increase in the optional standard mileage rates for the final four months of 2005. The rate--which is the amount employers may deduct for the reimbursement of employees who use their own cars for company business--will increase to 48.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2005, the IRS said. That's an increase of 8 cents from the 40.5 cent rate in effect for the first eight months of this year. (BLR)

  • Of the 3.7 million cancer survivors in the United States in 2001, 38 percent were working age (20 to 64 years old). Many cancer survivors work not only for the money, but also for the accompanying health insurance, self-esteem and social support. (Forbes)

  • Western Growers  is seeking immediate assistance to relieve what has become a growing labor shortage crisis affecting a wide range of crops and regions in the west. President and CEO Tom Nassif announced he is appealing to both state and federal officials to help provide for an adequate work force for farms throughout California and Arizona.

  • Raisin grower Richard Garabedian knows the gamble: The longer his grapes stay on the vine, the sweeter the raisins _ but the higher the chance they'll get caught by the rain that can ruin a year's worth of work. This season, the stakes are even higher. The raisin harvest is peaking, but agriculture's primary work force _ unauthorized immigrants _ is scarce, likely drained by a booming construction industry and tighter enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border. (Washington Post)

  • To help with staff relocations, or industry pros that have been displaced by the hurricane and floods, two industry recruiting firms Tuesday announced special Katrina-related initiatives. Media Staffing Network, a Chicago-based recruiter specializing in both full- and part-time media industry employees, said it is offering free job postings to companies that are willing to bring workers whose jobs have been affected by Katrina and offer them temporary employment until their regular businesses open.
