Complaining About Bad Bosses Is a Big Time Drain

Badbossology.com and Development Dimensions International survey finds that the majority of employees spend 10 hours or more a month complaining about or listening to others complain about bad bosses.

Based on a recent Badbossology.com survey sponsored by Development Dimensions International (http://www.ddiworld.com), the majority of employees spend 10 hours or more a month complaining about or listening to others complain about bad bosses, while nearly one third spend 20 or more hours.

"Organizations are losing hundreds of hours of productivity a month because of bad relationships between the boss and their teams," said Rich Wellins, Senior Vice President, DDI. "Companies need to make better decisions about who they advance to leadership roles. And they need to realize that leaders need continual development in crucial skills like coaching, building teams, and engaging employees to avoid this type of negative feeling."

Specifically, when asked about time spend complaining about or listening to others complain about bad bosses in an average month, of the 587 people who completed Badbossology.com's survey: 32 percent spend twenty or more hours; 28 percent spend ten hours; 30 percent spend three hours; and 12 percent spend thirty minutes.

A follow-up survey question, also sponsored by Development Dimensions International - a global human resource consulting firm - asks, "Have you done any of the following to get revenge on a bad boss?" This question's four potential answers along with results to date are available at: Badbossology.com.

Difficult bosses are a big problem in Corporate America. Other surveys indicate that approximately 40 percent of employees have had to deal with a bad boss. Badbossology.com itself is designed to protect both people and companies from bad bosses, and all of its content and services are available without any fees. It provides continually updated material in an intuitive, blog-style user interface. It takes a responsible balanced approach, devoid of ranting and 'Boss from Hell' stories, and also provides key resources for bosses, executives and board members. A "Vault" or secure repository is provided so visitors can bookmark items along with personal notes for fast reference. And material is drawn from sources such as The Chicago Tribune, CNNMoney.com, Fast Company and The Harvard Business School.

Australia:
  • Blokes return to the jobs hunt..Record job creation over the past 12 months has brought an end to a 30-year slide in the participation of men in the workforce. The number of men either in work or actively looking for a job rose to 72.4 per cent last month, the highest level in five years. But the number of women in the labour force, which has been steadily rising in response to the increased availability of part-time work, reached a new high of 57.4 per cent. John Howard yesterday hailed the result, saying it showed there were greater opportunities for work than ever.  (The Australian)

EU25:
  • In 2004, 194.5 million people aged 15 years and more had a job or a business activity in the EU25. The total employment rate1 for people aged 15-64 was 63.3%, compared to 62.4% in 20002. In 2004, the employment rate for women was 55.7%. Denmark (71.6%) and Sweden (70.5%) registered the highest rates of female employment in 2004, while Malta (32.8%), Italy and Greece (both 45.2%) had the lowest. Malta recorded the greatest difference between male and female employment rates, with a gap of 42 percentage points, followed by Greece, where the gap was nearly 30 percentage points, Spain and Italy, both with around 25 percentage points difference. On the other hand, Sweden (3 percentage points), Finland (4) and Estonia (6) recorded the lowest differences. (Complete Release)

  • By Tuesday, Kai-Fu Lee should have a clearer idea of what he can and cannot do at his new job with Google over the next few months. That's when a court in Washington state will rule on whether to extend a court order forbidding Lee from working in certain areas. (Computerworld)

UK:
  • Offshore outsourcing of IT and call centre roles to low-cost countries such as India has not hit UK jobs, according to the latest official employment statistics. The ONS' latest Labour Market Trends figures show that employment growth in call centre related occupations in the UK has been nearly three times the overall growth in employment, while redundancy levels have also consistently fallen since 2001. (Silicon.com)

US:
  •
  • Factor in all the other basic living expenses (and occasional "recreational" driving), and suddenly, thanks to surging oil prices and daily gas price increases, take-home pay is lower than money already budgeted. (Check out how much you're spending on gas with the Hatch Gas Calculator.) (Hatch MAgazine)

  • TENS of thousands of people may never return to New Orleans, threatening a population crash as devastating to the city as Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters. In addition to the 350,000 people who fled the city before the storm, more than 100,000 have been evacuated since and sent as far afield as Michigan and Utah, many vowing never to return. (The Australian)

  • California remained dominant in August when it came to new tech jobs posted online. That's the conclusion of a report due out next week from job search service NimbleCat. NimbleCat's research on new software and IT jobs posted to major Internet job boards found that California's share dipped slightly from 29.7 percent in July to 29 percent. No other state accounted for more than 10 percent of the new tech jobs online in August, according to NimbleCat. (CNET)

  • Mauro Bonomi has another wad of venture capital cash and is hiring tech talent again in the United States--but not like he did during the dot-com boom.  Bonomi recently landed about $10 million in venture funding for his company, Minerva Networks, which makes software that lets phone companies offer television services. This year, the 65-person, Santa Clara, Calif.-based company aims to hire 30 to 35 people, half or more of them likely to be computer professionals based in Silicon Valley or other parts of the United States. (CNET)

  • CIOs plan to pump up their hiring in the fourth quarter to the highest levels in more than three years, according to a new report released by IT staffing firm Robert Half Technology. (Information Week)

  • Counting the job losses will be daunting, said Tom Nardone, chief of the household employment section of the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. ``We're still making plans on how we're going to do the next survey,'' Nardone said in an interview. The jobs report for September is due out in early October. But, Nardone said, ``New Orleans has been evacuated and we're not going to be able to assess those households. And there are other areas where it is going to be tough to get in touch with people.''  (Guardian)
