The brain drain drawing Africa's nurses to the West has hobbled the fight against HIV/AIDS in Lesotho, a tiny kingdom where up to 30 percent of adults already have the virus, a U.N. official said on Friday. Stephen Lewis, the U.N. special envoy for AIDS
in Africa, said Lesotho's battle against AIDS highlighted problems in the international community's response to the disease in Africa, home to some 25 million of the world's total estimated 37.8 million people living with HIV. (Reuters)

Britain will seek ways to compensate African countries for the thousands of medical professionals who leave the continent to work in the UK health service, the government said on Friday. Compensation could take the form of in-country training, provision of
medicines and help with tackling infrastructure problems. But there are no plans to provide financial compensation for the so-called medical "brain-drain". About 70,000 qualified Africans leave their home countries every year to work abroad, the Department for International Development said, with many
going to the United Kingdom, other parts of Europe and the United States. (Reuters)

G2Bay, launched today, is positioned as an online global recruitment agency though its initial focus is jobs in the greater Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay Area. The twist? G2Bay says it
will evenly split the finder's fee with job seekers, a potential windfall of thousands of dollars for upper-level employees hired through the online company. (Internet News)

Employers need to be wary when they employ people on the basis of their impressive cirriculum vitae, as one in four people lie about their CV, according to a study. The average jobseeker tells three lies but some employees admitted making up more
than half their career history, reports the Telegraph. (NewWindPress)

"In response, global mining giants, flush with record profits, are chasing acquisitions and rushing to boost production in the deserts of Australia, the steppes of Mongolia and the jungles of Brazil. "But expansion is being slowed by a lack of qualified workers, in part because of
the specialized skills required for some mining jobs and in part because of tight labor markets in which workers have other options. The problem is exacerbating a long-term challenge for mines: attracting younger workers into entering a sometimes dangerous profession, often located in rural or
remote areas, that is vulnerable to economic cycles." (ResourceInvestor)

Is the best person to hire for a job necessarily a person who is looking for one? In many cases, the answer is no. Wouldn't you like to hire LeBron James to play on your basketball team even though he is not seeking the opportunity? In the recruiting business, industry parlance for
the potential hire who is not looking for a job is passive candidate, and Jobster is a new Web service designed to help companies identify the best ones. (PCMag)

Such business shows the increasingly powerful role played by headhunters. Does Bottomley, who likes her job so much that she gets into work at 6.30am, feel that she's in a position of power? "Influence," she says in her ministerial voice -
this time, without even a hint of a giggle. Bottomley's clout stems in part from her background. She was a senior member of John Major's government. Her brother, Christopher Garnett, is chief executive of GNER, the train operator. Her father, John Garnett, led the Industrial Society, the training
and lobbying group for business which is now called the Work Foundation. And her cousin is Peter Jay, the former ambassador to the US. Her husband, Peter Bottomley, is a Tory MP who made a reputation for espousing unfashionable causes and voicing unpredictable views. (Telegraph)

Matalan's HR director has cut 300 jobs at the retailer - including his own. Anthony McDaniel is one of about 90 staff to leave the discount retailer's head office in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, as part of cost cutting in the face of a tough trading period. (PersonnelToday)

The portion of employers offering undergraduate assistance dipped to 67 percent in 2005 from 71 percent in 2004 and 72 percent in 2003, according to a survey of 386 human-resource professionals from the Society for
Human Resource Management. (Salt Lake Tribune)

If your employer is clueless about why good workers leave yet keeps finding ways to cut benefits, you might agree with this new perspective:
Human resource directors are falling down on the job.
That is why Johnny Taylor, chairman of the Society for Human Resource Management, is issuing businesses a wake-up call. He's pushing the people in charge of employees to take on more strategic roles within corporations. He's pushing them to be more courageous. (Madison.com)

No one predicted this silver lining: Pleasanton could possibly gain more jobs as a result of the Oracle-PeopleSoft merger, in which 5,000 jobs worldwide were slashed from the ranks of both companies. That's because Oracle recently sold four of PeopleSoft's office buildings for about
$70 million to Kaiser Permanente, which plans to relocate about 1,000 information technology workers to Pleasanton. (Merc)
