Seriously Notable
Adecco USA (NYSE:ADO), the nation's leading staffing services provider, today announced that the company has joined the United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary corporate citizenship initiative with a vision of a more sustainable and inclusive global economy. The company is committed to supporting the Global Compact's ten principles, which seek to provide businesses with an ethical framework in which they may both expand market opportunities and conduct business responsibly.

The Global Compact's ten principles address issues of significance in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption. Specifically, the principles are as follows:

Human Rights
-- Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
-- Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labor Standards
-- Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
-- Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
-- Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and
-- Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment
-- Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
-- Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
-- Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies

Anti-Corruption
-- Principle 10: Businesses should work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery.

The Global Compact asks member organizations to embrace, support and enact, within their sphere of influence, these ten principles. It also asks members to engage with other partners to give concrete expression to the Global Compact principles. In order to advocate for changes that will make the business world a truly global community, Adecco USA will focus mainly on Principle 6, the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, in its global partnership efforts.

As Leo Loucas, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Adecco USA, says, "American anti-discriminatory laws are some of the most advanced in the world. Since Adecco USA is one of the country's largest employers, having employed more than half a million people in 2004 alone, the company is well suited to educating Adecco subsidiaries and clients in other nations about the importance of nondiscrimination as well as best practices in becoming an equal opportunity employer. We can also provide them with information that will help them lobby in favor of nondiscriminatory legislation in their own countries. Because Adecco operates in 70 territories around the world, there is enormous potential for positive change, leading to true globalization of the labor market, with equal employment opportunity for all qualified individuals. Only when the workplace is accessible to everyone can true social integration take place. In this way, Adecco hopes to contribute to the overall goal of establishing what UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan calls a 'sustainable and inclusive society'."

Adecco USA's first step in this initiative is to produce and distribute a training document affirming the company's commitment to and support of Principle 6. The information in the document is used to train Adecco USA colleagues, and the document will be sent to all Adecco subsidiaries worldwide to share and discuss with clients, candidates, and legislators or policy makers. This information will also be available on www.adeccousa.com on a page dedicated to Adecco's Global Compact membership.

As Enrique de la Rubia, the Adecco Group's legislative, public affairs and CSR officer, says, "We are very glad that Adecco USA has joined other Adecco Group business units in supporting the principles of the Global Compact. As an employment company, Adecco has extensive knowledge of the complexities of the labor market, placing us in a good position to battle workplace discrimination. Adecco USA's contribution to our knowledge about and training in support of nondiscriminatory practices will strengthen the power of collective action that defines the Global Compact."

New Zealand:

  • New Zealand's wages increased in the second quarter as a 19-year-low jobless rate forced employers to pay more to hire and retain skilled workers. Wages rose 0.6 percent from the first quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand's labor cost index released in Wellington today. From a year earlier, wages for non-government workers, excluding overtime, increased 2.5 percent. (Bloomberg)

Phillipines:

  • The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Friday confirmed that 55 of the 57 Filipinos who had been detained by Thai immigration authorities on July 27 were victims of illegal recruitment. Citing a report from Philippine embassy in Bangkok, the DFA said that the other two detainees, who were illegal recruiters, should be prosecuted by Thai immigration officials.  According to the report, the victims paid the recruiters in the Philippines placement fees of up to 150,000 pesos for jobs in South Korea, Britain and the United States. UK:

  • More than 80% of large companies plan to increase offshore outsourcing operations survey finds. Boom times in offshore outsourcing are set to continue with over three-quarters of large companies increasing their activities, according to research by sourcing advisory company TPI. (Accountancy Age)

  • Siddesh Shambhu and Melissa Marlow have much in common. Ambitious, dedicated, highly-qualified young doctors, they want to make their careers in the NHS. They are among 2,000 recently qualified doctors who can't get training placements in our hospitals. With staff shortages still hitting many health trusts despite billions in extra resources, such a waste of precious talent is unforgiveable. It stems from the Government's laudable but wholly botched decision to boost the number of places at medical schools. (DailyMail)

  • Like so many other companies in Scotland, Nichol McKay has become an importer of foreign workers to help a labour shortage that some say is nearing a crisis. Stagecoach boss Brian Souter last week announced plans to hire 1,000 bus drivers from Poland. Rival bus company FirstGroup began recruiting workers in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic in May last year, when eight east European countries joined the European Union. (Scottsman)

  • Britain?s technology sector has a problem. It?s got the gadgets, it?s got the gizmos, it?s got the easy money but it just doesn?t have the girls. At a point in time when diversity is one of the hottest topics in town, the technology sector is haemorrhaging women workers, with females, who account for just 20% of the IT industry?s workforce, leaving the sector faster than they?re joining up. (SundayHerald)

USA:

  • After jumping two points in June, the Spherion Employee Confidence Index retreated .4 of a point to 57.4 in July as more workers had a pessimistic outlook on the economy, despite better-than-expected job creation last month. The July index was at its average level for the last year, but 1.8 points lower than it was in July 2004. (South Fla Business Journal)

  • In July, Employment of information technology (IT) workers grew incrementally by 2,900 to 3,538,100, representing a .08% gain from the previous month. (PRNewswire)

  • ?In July, temporary help services employment was flat and has shown little net change since April.?
    ?The lack of growth in the temporary staffing numbers, as strong as that industry is today, is a powerful indicator of solid growth in the economy and in employment,? said Roger Herman, a workforce trend watcher. Herman, CEO of The Herman Group, explained that ?This measure confirms that employers are more confident and are now hiring full-time employees. They are moving away from the cautionary practice of using temporary workers as transitional labor. (NewsRelease)
