  • The ongoing legal spat over Google's hiring of a Microsoft executive is a reminder that "poaching" of top employees is alive and well. But it's risky business in an era of employment agreements with noncompete clauses and other restrictions, experts said. (ZDNet)

Japan: 

  • Japan's industrial production rose in June and the unemployment rate dropped to a seven-year low, bolstering a recovery from recession in the world's second-largest economy.  The jobless rate slid to 4.2 percent from 4.4 percent,. (Bloomberg)

USA:

  •  The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series -- which made its debut July 19 -- shows that there were just over 2 million first-time, online job postings appearing on major Internet job boards in June. That means there were 1.39 new online jobs advertised for every 100 people in the labor force. (CareerNews)

  • The Boston Fed's brief examined the incomplete recovery in labor force participation in the current economic expansion and concluded that the labor force shortfall today ranges from 1.6 million to 5.1 million. The addition of these hypothetical participants to officially measured unemployment, according to the brief, "would raise the unemployment rate by 1 to 3-plus percentage points." (Washington Times)
