Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report: In the week ending July 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 320,750, an increase of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 320,500.

Data from VentureOne shows that the past quarter saw the median price paid to acquire venture-backed companies rise to $70 million, the highest since 2000. And even though fewer companies, 77, were acquired in the past quarter compared with a year ago, when 100 such deals took place, the total amount paid for these companies rose 14% to $6.8 billion.

A week into the new period, news of two more significant acquisitions of venture-backed companies have emerged in the two leading M&A categories of the first half of the year: information technology and healthcare.
