Australia:

  • Meetro has a new spin on social networks: tapping into location information about Wi-Fi hotspots to link people who are using nearby access points. The idea is Mobile Social Software, or MoSoSo (Chicago Sun Times)

  • The roughly 3,000 union actors who give voice to game characters have worked under contract with game publishers since 1993. But now that video games pull in nearly as many dollars as domestic movie ticket sales, actors want a piece of every game sold, rather than one-time up-front fees. (San Francisco Business Times)

  • SAP boosts its talent in headhunting drive. (Techworld)

  • Two very different new services allow classified ads and ad sections to add information that allows them to hide or highlight advertisers' locations. (Editor and Publisher)

Greece: The sharp increase in the labor supply by about 5 to 10 percent over the past decade was absorbed without a jump in unemployment and with relatively few social problems. (INADaily)

Hong Kong: While Hong Kong saw a slight increase in  manpower in 2004, hiring intentions in 2005 continue to improve. (China View)

India

  • BPO business may soon be passe as India  readies to become the leading destination for knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) in areas of healthcare, pharma, biotech  (Economy and Business)

  • Monster.com  increased its share in the Indian online recruitment market to nearly 60 per cent against 20 per cent last year. (Business Standard)

Japan: "All conditions being equal, the country's worker population will decrease by 1.32 million in 2010, compared with 2004," said Ryutaro Kono, chief economist at BNP Paribas Securities (Japan) Ltd. "The labor supply will get tight." (Japan Times)

Massachussetts: While an immigration boom has bolstered the workforce in Massachusetts, poor English-language skills are trapping many of the state's new immigrants in low-paying jobs. (WRPI)

New Zealand:

  •  New Zealand's IT skill shortage has left Synergy with 23 vacancies to fill, some open for as long as five months. It's in particular need of solutions managers and Oracle developers. (Stuff.nz)

  • A new survey underlines the drastic shortage of skilled workers  in New Zealand and a big demand for them. (One News)

Phillipines: About 1.09 million jobs have been created in the first five months of this year. (Manilla Bulletin)

UK:

  • Salaries in the City of London have risen by an average of 7.5 per cent since February 2005 as a shortage of candidates leaves employers struggling to recruit skilled staff. (Management Issues)

  • Businesses in Scotland are continuing to struggle to find enough full-time staff. (Scottsman)

US:

  • Triple-digit annual growth rates are rare among major Web sites. Meet that rarity: Craigslist. (eCommerceTimes)

  • American income inequality - the gap between rich and poor - is the greatest it's been since the Gilded Age of the 1880s. Social mobility - the chance to rise above one's station in life - is rapidly disappearing in the  land of opportunity.  (Maine Today)

  • A lack of skilled workers may be behind tepid job creation as 56 percent of U.S. companies plan to hire more workers by year-end. (WebIndia123)

  • Last year, there were more people 55 and older in the work force than at any time since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began publishing that kind of data in 1948.  (Seattle Times)

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall labor force will grow by 12 percent by 2012. However, the percentage of workers aged 55 and older will increase by 49.3 percent. As many baby boomers retire, human resource (HR) professionals will need to determine how to best fill that void. (SHRM)

  • The US software industry lost 16% of its jobs from March 2001 to March 2004, Economic Policy Institute found. (ZDNET)

  • When public newspaper company executives meet up with investors and analysts, their skill at putting a good spin on unpleasant facts will be put to the test. (Poynteronline)
