Hudson Healthcare Index
Healthcare industry workers grew less confident about the employment market in May as a result of less anticipated hiring activity, heightened job security concerns and less optimism surrounding their personal finances. The sector's Hudson Employment Index fell 6.9 points to 102.6 in May from 109.5 in April. The national Index also decreased this month from 102.4 to 99.9, which is its lowest level to-date, and the first time it has fallen below 100.

Sector workers reported less optimism about their firms' hiring plans, with 36% expecting their companies to expand their workforce in the coming months compared to 38% who made that claim in April. Further, anticipated lay-off activity was back on the rise with 18% of industry workers expecting staff-cuts in their companies, up 5 points from 13% last month. Further, the percent of healthcare workers concerned about losing their job increased from 21% down to 24% in May.

Workers were also concerned about their finances. More than two-fifths (44%) reported that their situation was getting worse, compared to 38% in April. Conversely, the percent saying that the situation was improving fell from 44% last month to 39% in May. This is the first time this year that more healthcare workers were pessimistic than optimistic about their personal finances.
