From the Bureau
The Employment Situation Summary shows the Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 262,000 in February and the unem- ployment rate edged up to 5.4 percent. Job growth occurred in both goods- producing and service-providing industries.

New Combinations
Deploy Solutions announced that eQuest will provide its customers with international, national, and industry-specific job-posting deliveries through its host of online recruitment services.

Recruitmax, a provider of technology and services for building workforces, announced that it has acquired InfoTechWorks, a New Hope, Pa.-based provider of compensation management software and consulting services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Trends
CareerXroads released its annual Sources of Hire Study, covering the hiring trends of some of America's largest organizations throughout 2004. Key finding from the study show that the Internet and expanding referral networks continue to put pressure on traditional forms of recruiting and the major job boards continue to dominate on the Internet.

The National Association of State Personnel Executives reports that state governments could lose more than 30% of their workforce by 2006. The rates for state public health departments are as high as 43%.

U.S. Senators Chuck Hagel and Senator Dick Durbin re-introduced The Public Health Preparedness Workforce Development Act. This legislation aims to increase the pipeline of qualified public health workers at the federal, state, local and tribal levels by offering scholarships to students going into the public health field. It also encourages current employees to stay in the public health field by providing loan repayments in exchange for a commitment of a designated number of years of service in public health.
