Metropolitan Area Employment And Unemployment: December 2004. In December, 257 metropolitan areas recorded lower unemployment rates than a year earlier, 57 areas had higher rates, and 17 areas had rates that were unchanged. Twenty-six metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, with 16 of these located in the South. Ten metropolitan areas posted jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent; seven of
these were located in California and two were along the Mexican border in other States. The national unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in December, not seasonally adjusted.

Monster reports that 2.6 million new and updated resumes were submitted during initial weeks of January Jobs Campaign, which culminated with Ultimate Career Day. Festivities included inspiration career advice from notable athletes and celebrities, including Serena Williams, James Patterson, Bill Rancic, and Alex Trebek.
U.S. workers started 2005 with increased confidence towards the job market as the Hudson Employment Index rose 2.6 points in January to reach 106.2. Fewer workers anticipated job cuts in January and a significantly higher number of workers emerged confident about the state of their personal finances. The highlight, however, was that job satisfaction rose remarkably this month with over three-quarters of employees reporting that they are happy with their job, up 5 points from December and 4 points from the highest reading in 2004.
