Employment Cost Index: December 2004. Total compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.7 percent from September to December 2004, seasonally adjusted, moderating from the 0.9-percent gain from June to September. Benefit costs rose 1.4 percent, while wage and salary costs increased 0.4 percent, the smallest quarterly increase in wage and salaries in 2004. Rises in benefit costs accounted for more than 60 percent of the increase in compensation costs for civilian workers from September to December 2004.
Help-Wanted Index
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index increased 2 points in December. The index now stands at 38, as it did 1 year ago. Over the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising increased in seven of the nine regions across the U.S. The largest increases occurred in the South Atlantic (14.1%), West North Central (12.6%) and West South Central (12.4%) regions.
New Combinations
Electronic Data Systems Corp. agrees to pay about $420 million for the human resources outsourcing unit of Towers Perrin, a closely held consulting group. Both companies report plans to open a new human resources outsourcing company that will have $600 million on global revenue and serve more than 400 organizations and 33 million employees and participants.

LinkedIn will be implementing the first of its paid services. LinkedIn Jobs is designed to combine the ease and convenience of job boards with the power of referrals and networking capabilities that make hiring and being hired much more effective.
eQuest completes its direct job-posting integration with the Antipodes employment websites SEEK Australia and New Zealand, becoming the first job-posting distributor in the USA to use SEEK's new automated job posting service Fastlane Plus.
Career center network for the accounting, finance, banking, mortgage, and insurance industries, CareerBank.com reports that its sales more than doubled in 2004 and expects growth to continue in 2005 as the economy and job market continues to improve.
