Surveys Say…
The recent Salary Survey from CareerBank.com, exclusively for accounting, finance, and banking jobs, finds that the salary gap between men and women went down 3 percent this year, with women earning 25 percent less than men; that employees are being paid less than 1 percent more than last year; that networking is once again the most popular method for finding a new job (used by 44 percent of respondents); that use of online job sites increased in popularity (from 12% to 13%); and that 28 percent of respondents said they left their job because they found a better opportunity elsewhere.

Twenty-six percent of HR professionals responding to a November 2004 survey conducted by HR technology company ERC Dataplus and Human Resource Executive magazine reported their biggest challenge in 2004 was compensation and benefits. This compares to 33 percent reporting this as their biggest HR challenge in a similar survey conducted in 2003. That was closely followed by staffing/recruitment as reported by 21 percent of the respondents in 2004 compared to 14 percent in 2003.

With more than half a million jobs created in the last 3 months, American workers are slightly more confident in the outlook on the job market and economy, according to a recent survey by Spherion Corporation.

Corzen, a New York-based market-tracking company, reports that leading online job boards nearly tripled the revenue growth of traditional newspaper classified ads in the third quarter. Revenue growth at national online boards Careerbuilder, Monster, and HotJobs was 47.4 percent in the quarter, compared with the same period last year, versus 15.9 percent for newspapers' recruitment category in classified ads. In terms of revenues, however, online boards were way behind newspapers, $217 million versus $1.1 billion.
