Metropolitan Area Employment And Unemployment: October 2004. In October, 261 metropolitan areas recorded lower unemployment rates than a year earlier, 59 areas had higher rates, and 11 areas had rates that were unchanged. Twenty-five metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, with 12 of these located in the South, 7 in the Midwest, and 5 in the Northeast. Six of the seven areas with unemployment rates of at least 10.0 percent were located in California. The national unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, not seasonally adjusted, in October.

According to the 2004 U.S. Job Recovery and Retention Survey by the Society for Human Resource Management and CareerJournal.com. Thirty-eight percent of surveyed human resource (HR) professionals say they have noticed an increase in turnover since the beginning of 2004. It also finds that 75 percent of all employees are looking for new employment opportunities, and that top three reasons employees give are better compensation elsewhere (43%), better career opportunities (32%), and dissatisfaction with opportunities at current job (22%).

The ExecuNet Recruiters Confidence Index increased in November, with 74 percent of surveyed recruiters stating confidence that the executive employment market will improve during the next 6 months—up from 67 percent in October. During this period of time, the executive search industry is expecting a 16-percent increase in the number of assignments it receives from clients.
The U.S. Department of Defense has extended the IMPACT JEMS
(Jobs/Employment for Military Spouses) program through the end of Fiscal Year 2005. JEMS, a pilot program from St. Louis-based IMPACT Group,
is designed to help military spouses locate and secure employment. The project has developed a network of 185 participating employers in the St. Louis area and provided assistance to more than 600 military spouses at Scott Air Force Base.
