Assessment
Read the Electronic Recruiting News by John Sumser for industry insight and analysis.

From the Bureau
Personal Income and Outlays: August 2004. Personal income increased $35.1 billion (0.4 percent) and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $31.1 billion (0.4 percent) in August. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased less than $0.1 billion (less than 0.1 percent). In July, personal income increased $19.9 billion (0.2 percent), DPI increased $15.0 billion (0.2 percent), and PCE increased $90.2 billion (1.1 percent) based on revised estimates.

Help-Wanted
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index was unchanged in August. The index remains at 37. It was 37 one year ago. In the last 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in all nine U.S. regions. Steepest declines occurred in the New England (-10.4%), Pacific (-8.9%), West North Central (-8.4%) and East North Central (-7.5%) regions.

New Combinations
WisconsinJobs.com, part of the local career website network LocalCareers.com, has acquired GreatJobsWI.com. The acquisition of this site gives WisconsinJobs.com an enhanced online presence and an increase in job seeker traffic.

Reveille
Executive search firm Korn/Ferry International opens an athletic director search division, which will be run out of the Dallas office. This new division is part of Korn/Ferry's education practice and will fill needs for senior-level athletics administration talent at colleges and universities.

PeopleSoft Corp. fires its chief executive Craig Conway shortly before U.S. antitrust regulators said they would drop their case against Oracle Corp. and its $7.7 billion hostile bid for the company. The news sent PeopleSoft stock up more than 14 percent and past Oracle's $21-per-share offer on investor expectations that Oracle could now reach a deal for the corporate software vendor at a higher price. According to PeopleSoft, independent directors voted unanimously to dismiss Conway, citing a "loss of confidence" in his leadership. PeopleSoft founder and chairman, Dave Duffield, took over as CEO.
