From the Bureau Mass Layoffs In August 2004. In August 2004, employers took 809 mass layoff actions, as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month. Each action involved at least 50 persons from a single establishment, and the number of workers involved totaled 69,033. Both the number of events and initial claims were lower than a year ago. It should be noted that August 2004 contained 4 weeks for possible mass layoffs, compared with 5 weeks in each August of the prior 3 years.
New Combinations General Employment Enterprises, a professional staffing services firm specializing in information technology, accounting, and engineering placements, sells its staffing business assets in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for $715,000 in cash to Generation Technologies, L.P.

According to figures released by the Information Technology Association of America, information technology (IT) employment increased just 2 percent from 2003 to 2004, with figures expected to dip for the remainder of this year. The survey placed the size of the U.S. IT workforce at 10.5 million.
Peopleclick, a provider of workforce management solutions, implements an application for Montgomery County, Maryland, that lets the county recruit police officers online and allows recruiters and hiring managers to simplify, automate, and track the hiring process.
In the new survey report posted on CareerJournal.com, leading corporate recruiters ranked the University of Michigan as the top National program; Purdue University as the top Regional program; and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, as the top International program. The survey ranks schools by how well they and their graduates meet corporate talent requirements according to recruiters. CareerJournal.com recently won a 2004 WebAward for website excellence in the Employment Category.
