From the Bureau
Regional and State Employment and Unemployment: August 2004. Regional and State unemployment rates were generally little changed in
August. All four regions and 40 States and the District of Columbia recorded
shifts of 0.3 percentage point or less in their jobless rates from July. The national unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in August. Among the four regions, the South again reported the lowest unemployment rate in August, 5.0 percent. The Midwest and West posted the highest rates, 5.6 percent each. All regions posted over-the-year jobless rate declines: the West (-1.0 percentage point), the South (-0.8 point), the Northeast (-0.6 point), and the Midwest (-0.4 point).
New Combinations
LocalCareers.com, a network of regional and national career sites, acquires MissouriJobs.com, ArkansasJobs.com, and LouisianaJobs.com. The acquisitions are designed to give LocalCareers.com a greater presence in the Southern Midwest of the United States. Terms of the acquisition were not released.
Reveille
Hire.com, a Global Enterprise Recruiting firm, partners with Novotus, specialists in candidate mining and sourcing solutions, to integrate the Novotus NovoFlow candidate-sourcing technology with HireEnterprise 8. The partnership is designed to assure customer compliance with increasingly regulated permission-based marketing to candidate communities.
Couldn't Pass It Up
"The Effect of Applicant Influence Tactics on Recruiter Perceptions of Fit and Hiring Recommendations: A Field Study" examines the effect of applicant influence-tactic use (ingratiation and self-promotion) on recruiter perceptions of fit. Results suggested that ingratiation had a positive effect on perceived fit and recruiter hiring recommendations (and indirectly, on receipt of a job offer). In addition, perceived fit mediated the relationship between ingratiation and hiring recommendations. The effects of self-promotion on fit and hiring recommendations were generally weak and nonsignificant. From the Journal of Applied Psychology Vol. 89, No. 4.
