From the Bureau
The Employment Situation: August 2004. Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 144,000 in August, and the unemployment
rate was little changed at 5.4 percent. Over the month, job growth occurred
in several service-providing (health care and social assistance) industries.
Productivity and Costs: Second Quarter 2004. The
revised, seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second
quarter are: 1.5 percent in the business sector and 2.5 percent in the nonfarm
business sector. In both sectors, increases in productivity were smaller than
reported last month, as output was revised down and hours were revised up.
In manufacturing, the revised productivity changes in the second quarter
are: 6.9 percent in manufacturing, 4.9 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and 9.7 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.
Monster Index
According to the latest Monster Employment Index, the overall demand for workers and related online job recruitment activity across the United States grew in August. Rebounding off a slight decline in July, the index resumed its upward trend in August, reflecting continued strength in U.S. online job availability. Overall, the index rose to 145 in August from 134 in July.
Onward and Upward
In a survey of more than 1,600 workers, CareerBuilder.com, finds that the top 5 barriers to
career progress are #1-Lack of Career Advancement Opportunities at Present
Employer, #2-Lack of Appropriate Education, Training and Experience,
#3-Inadequate Direction from Supervisors, #4-A Challenging Economy, and #5-Lack
of Support from Present Employers. Thirty percent are dissatisfied with their
career progress, and 42 percent of those, who are dissatisfied with their career
progress, plan to leave their current positions, with 28 percent expecting to
change jobs before the end of the year.
