Regional and State Employment and Unemployment: July 2004. Unemployment rates were generally little changed in July. All four
regions and 43 States registered unemployment rate shifts of 0.3 percentage
point or less from June. Over the year, jobless rates declined in all four regions and 49 States. The national jobless rate in July was 5.5 percent, essentially unchanged from June. Nonfarm payroll employment rose in
28 States and the District of Columbia over the month. The South, again, reported the lowest unemployment rate among
the four regions, 4.9 percent. The West continued to post the highest
rate, 5.7 percent, followed by the Midwest, 5.5 percent.
Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report In the week ending August 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 331,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 334,000. The 4-week moving average was 337,000, a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 339,500.
Priorities
According to a global survey of chief executives released today by The Conference Board and sponsored by Heidrick and Struggles and PeopleSoft, CEOs of Asian companies are more concerned with people issues, such as stimulating innovation and acquiring top talent, while U.S. and European CEOs are focusing on sustaining top-line growth as their economies recover.

Considering Moving
Nearly one in every six (14%) Bay Area companies has seriously considered moving their entire operations out of the nine-county region within the last 2 years, according to the Bay Area Council Business Confidence Survey. Additionally, 31 percent of business leaders say that their company has considered moving business functions outside the region; and nearly one-fifth (18%) considered offshoring jobs held by Bay Area workers.
