Regional And State Employment And Unemployment: May 2004 . Regional and State unemployment rates were generally
little changed in May, but down over the year. All four regions, 37 States, and
the District of Columbia had shifts of 0.3 percentage point or less in
their unemployment rates from April. The national jobless rate was
unchanged at 5.6 percent in May. Nonfarm payroll employment rose in 36
States.
Gross Domestic Product by Industry for 2003. The new
GDP-by-industry data for 1998–2003 show that the services sector led real GDP
growth in 2001–2003. Services sector industries increased 2.2 percent in 2001,
2.6 percent in 2002, and 3.6 percent in 2003. The goods sector (consisting
primarily of manufacturing) grew 1.1 percent in 2003, after increasing 0.9
percent in 2002. Manufacturing increased 2.4 percent in 2002 and 1.7 percent in
2003, after declining 5.4 percent in 2001.

New Combinations
Hewitt Associates, Inc., a global HR outsourcing and consulting firm, and Exult, Inc., a provider of HR business process outsourcing, will merge. The
transaction is subject to stockholder and regulatory approval, and is currently
expected to close around the end of Hewitt's fiscal year, September 30.
Staffing Growth Continues
Results of a national survey from the
American Staffing Association shows that America's staffing companies employed 9.1 percent more workers in the first quarter of this year than in the same period last year. Employed was an average of 2.3 million temporary and contract workers per day from January through March of this year, nearly 200,000 more than in the same period last year, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year staffing employment growth.
