The Employment Situation: May 2004. Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 248,000 in May, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.6 percent. The May increase in payroll employment follows gains of 346,000 in April and 353,000 in March (as revised). Job growth in May again was widespread, as increases continued in construction, manufacturing, and several service-providing industries.

Too Many Differences
Pay disparity continues to be a concern for one-in-five women, who say they are paid less than men with similar talents and experience. The same amount of women reported they have fewer opportunities for career advancement than men at their current organizations, according to a new CareerBuilder.com survey Men and Women at Work 2004.
