From the Bureau
Preliminary productivity data for the fourth quarter and for the full year 2003. In the fourth quarter, productivity increased 1.8 percent in the business sector. In nonfarm businesses, productivity grew more slowly in the fourth quarter, 2.7 percent. On an annual average basis, productivity rose 4.3 percent in the business sector and 4.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector.

Manufacturing productivity grew 4.8 percent in the fourth quarter, reflecting a 6.6-percent increase in output and a 1.7-percent rise in hours of all persons. On an annual average basis, output per hour in the manufacturing sector posted a 4.3-percent increase in 2003.

Employment Situation for January. Employment rose in January, and the unemployment rate, at 5.6 percent, was little changed. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 112,000, with job gains in construction and several service-providing industries. Manufacturing employment continued to trend down, but the rate of job loss has moderated in recent months.

Employment Index
In January, the Hudson Employment Index rose 5.4 points to 105.4. The upward move reflects greater optimism about hiring plans and fewer concerns about job cuts. The survey also reveals that 31 percent of respondents predict their companies will be hiring more people, while only 16 percent expect layoffs.

HR on the Rise
The Boston Globe reports on a little-noticed measure of the job market's health is taking off—the hiring of human resources professionals.
