From the Bureau
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers decreased
0.3 percent in November, before seasonal adjustment. The November
level of 184.5 was 1.8 percent higher than in November 2002.
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers
(CPI-W) also decreased 0.3 percent in November, prior to seasonal
adjustment. The November level of 180.2 was 1.6 percent higher than in
November 2002.
Real average weekly earnings increased by 0.6 percent from October to
November after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. This
was due to a 0.1-percent increase in average hourly earnings, a 0.3-percent
rise in average weekly hours, and a 0.3-percent decrease in CPI-W.
Employment Outlook Survey
U.S. employers continue to show optimism in their hiring forecast for the first quarter of 2004, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey . Of the 16,000 U.S. employers that were polled, 20 percent said they plan to boost employment levels for the first 3 months of 2004, while 13 percent anticipate a slower hiring pace. Sixty-one percent of employers expect to offer the same number of jobs as last quarter, and 6 percent are unsure of their first quarter employment activity. When the seasonal variations are removed from the survey results, the data reveals that the hiring forecast from January to March is more positive than it was last quarter and relatively consistent with the outlook a year ago.
