The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers decreased 0.1 percent in October, before seasonal adjustment. The October level of 185.0 was 2.0 percent higher than in October 2002. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) decreased 0.2 percent in October, prior to seasonal adjustment. The October level of 180.7 was 1.9 percent higher than in October 2002.
Real average weekly earnings increased by 0.5 percent from September to October after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. This was due to a 0.1-percent increase in average hourly earnings, a 0.3-percent increase in average weekly hours, and a 0.2-percent decrease in CPI-W.

Survey Says
A survey conducted by ERC Dataplus and Human Resource Executive magazine found that the majority of respondents indicated that their 2004 hiring levels will remain unchanged. For the balance of the respondents, 38 percent expected hiring to increase in 2004, while 17 percent expected a decrease at their organizations. Of those that expected an increase in hiring, the average was a jump of 7 percent. Of those who expected a decrease, the average drop was a more significant 23 percent.
