From the Bureau
Real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 7.2 percent in the third quarter of 2003, according to advance estimates. In the second quarter, real GDP increased 3.3 percent. The major contributors to the increase in real GDP in the third quarter were personal consumption expenditures, equipment and software, residential fixed investment, and exports. The contributions of these components were partly offset by a negative contribution from private inventory investment.
Total compensation costs for civilian workers rose 1.0 percent from June to September 2003, seasonally adjusted, virtually unchanged from the 0.9 percent gain from March to June. Benefit costs increased 1.5 percent and continued to outpace the gain in wages and salaries for civilian workers in September, 0.7 percent. Over 40 percent of the increase in compensation costs was attributable to changes in benefit costs during the September quarter.
Personal income increased $27.1 billion (0.3%) and disposable personal income (DPI) decreased $82.6 billion (1.0%) in September. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) decreased $26.5 billion (0.3%). Revised estimates for August show that personal income increased $29.2 billion (0.3%), DPI increased $79.5 billion (1.0%), and PCE increased $82.7 billion (1.1%).
Help-Wanted Index
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index was 37 in September, holding even with the previous month. It was 43 a year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in eight of the nine U.S. regions. Steepest declines occurred in the Mountain (-14.6%), West North Central (-12.1%), South Atlantic (-9.4%) and New England (-7.9%) regions.
