In September, 166 metropolitan areas recorded higher unemployment rates than a year earlier, 143 areas had lower rates, and 22 areas had rates that were unchanged. Fourteen areas posted unemployment rates below 3.0 percent, with nine of these located in the Midwest and four in the South. Seven metropolitan areas had jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent; four of these were located in California's Central Valley and the other three were along the Mexican border in other States. The national unemployment rate was 5.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted, in September.

CareerExchange Interactive releases a new module for its SonicRecruit Applicant Tracking product. The vendor management module allows users to organize all applications received from employment agencies into one searchable database.
Emoonlighter, an online marketplace for freelance talent, reports a triple-digit percentage growth in two key metrics for the third quarter of
2003 compared to the third quarter of 2002. The acquisition of the Guru.com employer base contributed positively to the quarter's increase in project volume.
