Help-Wanted Advertising
The Help-Wanted Advertising Index dipped one point in August to 37. It was 41 a
year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising rose in seven of the nine U.S. regions. Largest increases occurred in the Mountain (19.3%), East South Central (8.0%), and Pacific (6.0%) regions. Declines occurred in the Middle Atlantic (-10.5%) and South Atlantic (-5.7%) regions.

New Research
Using three key factors (industry capital intensity, industry growth, and industry product differentiation) determines how much high-performance work practices could affect bottom-line productivity of an individual company. High-performance work practices are most effective in industries where intellectual capital or intangible resources provide the foundation for strategic differentiation. Such industries include computers, process control instruments, medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications apparatus, and other growing industries in which companies are innovating and creating differentiated brands. Unhappy Campers
According to a recent survey from The Conference Board, Americans continue to grow more
unhappy with their jobs. Less than half of all Americans say they are satisfied
with their jobs–the highest level of discontent since the survey was first
conducted in 1995. The decline in job satisfaction is found among workers of all
ages, across all income brackets and regions. Regionally, discontent is the
lowest in New England and West South Central regions.
