The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.4 percent in August, before seasonal adjustment. The August level of 184.6 was 2.2 percent higher than in August 2002. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also rose 0.4 percent in August, prior to seasonal adjustment.
Real average weekly earnings decreased by 0.3 percent from July to August after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. A 0.1-percent increase in average hourly earnings was offset by a 0.4-percent rise in CPI-W. Average weekly hours were unchanged.
Quarterly Employment Outlook
U.S. employers expect to strengthen their hiring activity in the fourth quarter of 2003, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. Of the 16,000 U.S. employers that were surveyed, 22 percent said they plan to increase hiring activity for the October through December period, while 11 percent expect a decrease in employment opportunities. Another 62 percent of employers foresee no change in hiring, and 5 percent are uncertain of their staffing plans. When the seasonal variations are removed from the data, the survey results for this quarter mark the first increase in job prospects since the first quarter of 2003.
