From the Bureau
The Employment Situation. Total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 93,000 in August, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 6.1 percent. Job losses continued in manufacturing, information, and other sectors, while health care and construction added jobs. Because of the way employment is defined in the two surveys, it is likely that the blackout of August 14 had little effect on the August employment counts.
Productivity and Costs. The revised seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were: 7.2 percent in the business sector and 6.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector. In both sectors, increases in productivity were larger than initially reported, due primarily to upward revisions to output.
In manufacturing, the revised productivity changes in the second quarter were: 3.7 percent in manufacturing, 3.5 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and 3.4 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing. In total manufacturing, the change in productivity was revised down from a preliminary estimate of 4.2 percent.
