Virus Alert
The Washington Post and
SiliconValley.com report on a fast-spreading Internet worm that takes advantage of a recently discovered vulnerability that affects nearly all recent versions of Windows. W32/Lovsan.worm or W32.Blaster.Worm is a worm that will exploit the DCOM RPC vulnerability (described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-026) using TCP port 135. Symantec has upgraded this to a Category 3 threat.
Check Out the Competition
SoftwareJobLink.com is a new career Web site serving professionals working in the software industry, which functions similar to an Internet search engine. From JobLink Systems, Inc.
State Updates
According to Twin Cities Press, Wisconsin State officials are investigating whether to close several one-stop job centers in sparsely populated areas to trim spending. The budget signed into law by Governor Jim Doyle last month cuts funding to the Department of Workforce Development by $126 million over 2 years, from $2.28 billion to $2.15 billion.
The Ties That Bind
Executive search firm Morgan Howard Worldwide studied 356 high-ranking global executives and found that most executives refuse job offers because of disapproval by a spouse and other family reasons, or a disagreement about pay. Less-common reasons for rejecting offers include company stability, lack of challenge/job content, and lack of opportunities for growth. Morgan Howard notes that potential employers tend to focus least on what matters most to recruits. In her latest newsletter (No. 26), one of my favorite systems thinkers, Andrea Maloney-Schara discusses how family affects business matters.
