Staying Put
Despite the protracted economic downturn and continuing layoffs in a tight job market, employees are proving both resilient and resolute in coping with the uncertain environment, according to a comprehensive new workforce study by management, human resource consulting and administration firm Towers Perrin. Driven mostly by necessity, employees are staying focused on their jobs, realizing their near-term future is tied to their current employer's success.

Specifically, the study found that people have a very strong work ethic and remain committed to helping their companies succeed. Fully 78 percent say they're personally motivated to help their company succeed, and an equal number agree they are willing to put in extra effort to make that happen. Just over three-quarters (77%) say they really care about the future of their company, while 70 percent say they're proud to work for their company, and 61 percent agree their company is a good place to work.

The Big But
CFO reports on what happens to the good will when the economy recovers. It very well may depend on employers' meeting people's need for a number of workplace elements, notably, strong leadership, advancement and development opportunities, and a sense of control over work and the work environment. These are among the key factors that build employee engagement, and this is where employees tell us companies need to put their time and focus.
