The gap in personal income growth rates for urban and rural areas in 2001 narrowed to its smallest amount since 1996, the last year that rural areas grew faster than urban areas, according to estimates. Personal income increased 3.4 percent for metropolitan areas and 2.9 percent for nonmetropolitan areas for a gap of 0.5 percent
