Insight and analysis from industry leader John Sumser.

From the Bureau
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.8 percent in February, before seasonal adjustment. The February level of 183.1 was 3.0 percent higher than in February 2002.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also increased 0.8 percent in February, prior to seasonal adjustment. The February level of 179.2 was 3.2 percent higher than in February 2002.

Real average weekly earnings decreased by 0.5 percent from January to February after seasonal adjustment. A 0.7-percent increase in average hourly earnings was offset by a 0.6 percent decline in average weekly hours and a 0.7-percent increase in CPI-W.

Most State unemployment rates declined in January, as did the rates for all four regions and nine geographic divisions. The national jobless rate decreased to 5.7 percent in January. Nonfarm employment increased in 25 States and the District of Columbia in January.

Interview Exchange, a suite of interactive applicant screening solutions from AdamsHand, Inc., has been enhanced to include e-screening tools with modular, building-block flexibility and the ability to screen applicant from other online sources.

Hunt-Scanlon reports that the U.S. search industry declined last year and that overall, 2002 was a mixed year for the four largest U.S. search firms, as only Spencer Stuart posted solid revenue gains. Although Heidrick & Struggles International topped Korn/Ferry International in both the U.S. and worldwide rankings, both firms experienced annual revenue falloffs exceeding 20 percent; since hitting all-time revenue highs in 2000 their U.S. search fees are now off 46 percent and 55 percent respectively. While revenues for these two publicly traded firms now approximate 1998 levels, the gap between them and third-ranked Spencer Stuart has narrowed considerably.
