The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers declined 0.2 percent in December, before seasonal adjustment. The December level of 180.9 was 2.4 percent higher than in December 2001.
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also declined 0.2 percent in December, prior to seasonal
adjustment. The December level of 177.0 was 2.4 percent higher than in December 2001.
Real average weekly earnings were unchanged from November to December after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. A 0.3-percent decline in average weekly hours and a 0.1-percent rise in CPI-W were offset by a 0.3-percent increase in average hourly earnings.
Federal Update
Watson Wyatt reports that in December, the IRS published proposed regulations explaining how cash balance plans can demonstrate compliance with age discrimination laws and general nondiscrimination tests. The draft regulations are primarily age discrimination rules that apply to all employer-sponsored retirement plans, with specific attention paid to cash balance plans.

Dillistone Systems Group, supplier of software, publications, and services to executive recruiters, announced a Management Buy Out by a team of investors led by Managing Director, Jason Starr, and Operations Director, Rory Howard.

Oh, the Possibilities
PRNewswire reports that Washington, D.C.-based Radio One, owner of radio stations targeting urban listeners, will team with Philadelphia-based
Comcast to launch a new cable television network targeting African-Americans. Radio One is expected to make a cash investment of up to $70 million in the joint venture, which is expected to launch around mid-year.
