In November, 196
metropolitan areas recorded higher unemployment rates than a year earlier, 121 areas had lower rates, and 14 areas had rates that were unchanged. Twelve areas, most with large shares of agricultural employment, posted jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, with eight located in California and three along the Mexican border in other States. Twenty-seven areas reported unemployment rates below 3.0 percent, with 12 located in the Midwest and 10 in the South. The national unemployment rate in November was 5.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted.
New Combinations
Internet content and services giant Yahoo signs a definitive agreement to acquire
Inktomi, a provider of free and paid Web search services, for $235 million.
Reveille
Marketed under the product name Workforce Recruiter, the Recruitmax software will add recruiting functionality to the Kronos Workforce Central suite. Kronos Incorporated is a single-source provider of integrated human resources, payroll, and labor management solutions.
The new partnership gives BrassRing customers the ability to use the portable employment services of MyBizOffice to engage non-employee project contractors from the BrassRing Enterprise platform.
Webhire, the Lexington, Massachusetts-based provider of Internet-based and client-server recruiting software, files with the Securities and Exchange Commission to deregister its common stock and become a private company.
Notes to Ponder
Associated Press reports that Mount Sinai Medical Center filed a fraud lawsuit in Miami-Dade Circuit Court against executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles, claiming the headhunters hid the tarnished track record of the hospital's former chief executive, who had nearly $65 million in losses, and should have known the executive's past before recommending him for the position. It's an interesting questionwho is responsible for knowing and disclosing what about whom?
