Personal income increased $7.7 billion (0.1 percent) and disposable personal income DPI) increased $14.2 billion (0.2 percent) in October. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $26.9 billion, or 0.4 percent. In September, personal income increased $37.5 billion, or 0.4 percent, DPI increased $37.3 billion, or 0.5 percent, and PCE decreased $31.4 billion, or 0.4 percent, based on revised estimates.
In October, 194
metropolitan areas recorded higher unemployment rates than a year earlier, 117 areas had lower rates, and 20 areas had rates that were unchanged. Among the nine metropolitan areas with rates of at least 10.0 percent, six were located in California's agricultural Central Valley and the remainders were along the Mexican border in other States. Thirty areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, with 14 located in the Midwest and 10 in the South. The national unemployment rate in October was 5.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 5.0 percent a year earlier.

Speaking at a CEO business forum Former General Electric chairman Jack Welch said that it is in difficult economic times that corporate leaders have to earn their salaries by reassuring employees.
