Things Have Changed
Read John Sumser's article in Electronic Recruiting News.

From the Bureau
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.2 percent in October, before seasonal adjustment. The October level of 181.3 was 2.0 percent higher than its level in October 2001.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also rose 0.2 percent in October, prior to seasonal adjustment. The October level of 177.3 was 1.9 percent higher than the index in October 2001.

Real average weekly earnings decreased by 0.3 percent from September to October after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. A 0.3-percent decline in average weekly hours and a 0.2-percent increase in CPI-W were partly offset by a 0.2-percent rise in average hourly earnings.

Compensation
A new survey suggests that companies need to articulate to employees how pay systems work and how individual compensation packages are determined. It seems this encourages employees satisfied with their compensation. From HBS.

Outlook
U.S. employers will increase their hiring activity in the third quarter of 2002, continuing the steady upward trend toward recovery that began in second quarter, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. Of the nearly 16,000 firms interviewed, 27 percent plan to add employees, 8 percent expect to reduce their current workforce, 59 percent expect to maintain their current staff levels, and 6 percent are uncertain.
