Both nonfarm payroll
employment and the unemployment rate were essentially unchanged in September. Job losses in manufacturing and transportation offset gains in finance and health services.
The number of unemployed persons (8.1 million) and the unemployment rate (5.6 percent) were essentially unchanged in September.
New Combinations
McLean, Virginia-based Gannett Co Inc., publisher of USA Today, has purchased a one-third interest in online job site CareerBuilder for about $98.3 million.
The more than 90 Gannett newspapers will become CareerBuilder affiliates and CareerBuilder will run the career channel on USAToday.com. Gannett joins media companies Knight-Ridder and Tribune Company as owners.

Couldn't Pass It Up
The Hollywood Reporter reports that a new television format from Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) offers jobs as prizes to unemployed people has raised the ire of the AFL-CIO. SPTI announced it had secured the international format rights to a reality show from Argentina called "Human Resources." Viewers watch unemployed people compete for actual jobs as well as cash prizes and employee benefits.
