From the Bureau
The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were:
1.7 percent in the business sector and
1.5 percent in the nonfarm business sector.

In both sectors, increases in productivity were larger than reported on August 9, due primarily to upward revisions to output.

In manufacturing, the revised productivity changes in the second quarter were:
    4.3 percent in manufacturing,
6.0 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and
2.6 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.

Both payroll employment and the unemployment rate were little changed in August. Job gains in services, government, and construction were largely offset by losses in manufacturing and retail trade. Both the unemployment rate, 5.7 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, 8.1 million, were little changed over the month. The jobless rates for the major worker groups-adult men (5.2 percent), adult women (4.9 percent), teenagers (17.2 percent), whites (5.1 percent), blacks (9.6 percent), and Hispanics (7.5 percent)-showed little or no change. The number of persons unemployed 15 weeks or more was 2.8 million in August, down from the recent high of 3.1 million in June.

New Combinations
A.T. Kearney agrees to acquire certain assets of Ray & Berndtson Inc., a privately held retained executive search firm based in Forth Worth, Texas. These assets will become part of A.T. Kearney Executive Search, which will extend employment agreements to key Ray & Berndtson Inc. partners and staff, including CEO and chairman Paul R. Ray, Jr. Concurrent with the agreement, Ray & Berndtson Inc. has filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. The transaction involves personnel from eight offices of Ray & Berndtson Inc., located in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Palo Alto. Terms and conditions of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Adecco Career Services, a division of global HR company Adecco and the parent of Lee Hecht Harrison, has acquired resume writing and career counseling company Resume.com for an undisclosed amount.
