Personal income in all 50 States and the District of Columbia increased at solid rates in the first quarter of 2002. In contrast with Fourth Quarter 2001 when personal income fell in 31 States, and no State had growth above 1.4 percent.
For the nation, personal income increased 1.4 percent in first quarter of 2002 after declining 0.3 percent in fourth quarter of 2001.
The 10 States with the fastest growth in personal income in the first quarter of 2002 were North Dakota (3.0%), Mississippi (2.3%), Nevada (2.3%), Oklahoma (2.2%), North Carolina (2.1%), Tennessee (2.1%), New Mexico (2.1%), Alaska (2.0%), Kansas (2.0%), and Hawaii (2.%). Together, these States accounted for about 9.1 percent of the U.S. personal income, and they contributed about 14.1 percent of the $118-billion increase in the first quarter of 2002.
