For the month of June, the employment situation was steady: the unemployment rate was at essentially unchanged 5.9 percent, payroll employment was little changed for the fourth month in a row, and none of the major industry groups showed any significant change. Average hourly earnings grew by 6 cents in June, following 5 months of small increases.
In May, 280 metropolitan areas reported higher unemployment rates than a year earlier, 43 areas had lower rates, and 8 had rates that were unchanged. Nine metropolitan areas registered jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, six of which were located in California's Central Valley and two along the Mexican border in other States. Twenty-seven areas recorded unemployment rates below 3.0 percent, with 10 of these areas in the Midwest and 9 in the South. The national unemployment rate in May was 5.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted.
