Real gross domestic product, the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States, increased at an annual rate of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of 2002, according to revised estimates. In the fourth quarter, real GDP increased 1.7 percent.
Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending June 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 398,000. The 4-week moving average was 391,000, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 397,500.
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 15 were in Michigan (+3,217), California (+1,335), Pennsylvania (+652), Maryland (+611), and Tennessee (+536), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-3,746), New York (-3,690), North Carolina (-3,526), Texas (-2,111), and Illinois (-2,079).
Help-Wanted Index
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index dipped 2 points in May, and now stands at 45. It was 60 1 year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in all nine U.S. regions. Steepest declines occurred in the South Atlantic (-9.4%), Mountain (-8.3%), Pacific (-7.8%), and West South Central (-7.7%) regions.

A Jobless Recovery?
BusinessWeek reports that even though the rebound is still finding its feet, hiring trends indicate that the U.S. may see a labor shortage just down the road.
