Creating Strategies for the Future
SHRM reports on a Ferris State University survey, (in conjunction with manufacturing associations) which finds that a majority of high school students receive little or no career guidance, that the courses of study they choose have little correlation to available jobs, and that there is a bias toward 4-year liberal arts education.

In the February issue of Journal of Adolescence, there are two studies looking into adolescents and careers. In The role of personality, parents and peers in adolescents career exploration researchers find that individual characteristics and parental behaviors were correlated positively with information-seeking behaviors. The researchers also find that peer discussion about career-related issues were significantly associated with the intensity of information-seeking behaviors and exploration.

In Occupational dreams, choices and aspirations: adolescents' entrepreneurial prospects and orientations researchers find that among students more willing to expend effort, levels of Entrepreneurial Orientation were higher for those who were conscientious, self-efficient, open to new experiences, and low in agreeableness. Among students less willing to expend effort, a high need for social recognition predicted higher levels of Entrepreneurial Orientation. (Free registration required.)
