Four relatively energy-intensive States-New Mexico, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Alaska-led the Nation in per capita personal income growth in 2001, according to preliminary estimates. The five states with the slowest growth in per capita income were Washington, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, and Michigan.
For the Nation, per capita income grew 2.7 percent, to $30,271 in 2001, after growing 5.8 percent in 2000. This slowdown reflected a substantial deceleration in personal income growth to 3.7 percent in 2001 from 7.0 percent in 2000; population growth also decelerated slightly to 0.9 percent from 1.1 percent.
In the fourth quarter of 2001, U.S. personal income decreased $16.7 billion, for a drop of 0.2 percent (at quarterly rates) after growing 0.3 percent in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter of 2001, personal income declined in 34 States, was unchanged in 2, and grew slightly in 14 States and the District of Columbia.
