From the Bureau
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.4 percent in February, before seasonal adjustment, to a level of 177.8. For the 12-month period ended in February, the CPI-U increased 1.1 percent.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) increased 0.3 percent in February, prior to seasonal adjustment. The February level of 173.7 was 0.8 percent higher than the index in February 2001.

Real average weekly earnings decreased by 0.1 percent from January to February after seasonal adjustment. This decline was due to a 0.2-percent increase in CPI-W, which was partially offset by a 0.1-percent increase in average hourly earnings. Average weekly hours were unchanged.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that effective with the Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report for the week ending April 6, 2002, the seasonally adjusted initial and continued claims estimates will be developed using a new procedure for seasonal adjustment, which will be more responsive in depicting changes in seasonal patterns, and will result in a less volatile series.

In the week ending March 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 371,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure. The 4-week moving average was 379,000, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average.
