Personal income increased $35.1 billion (0.4 percent) and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $118.3 billion (1.6 percent) in January. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $27.7 billion (0.4 percent).

Private wage and salary disbursements decreased $9.5 billion in January, in contrast to an increase of $20.5 billion in December. Government wage and salary disbursements increased $7.5 billion in January, compared with an increase of $3.1 billion in December. Pay raises for Federal civilian and military personnel added $7.2 billion to government payrolls in January.

Real gross domestic product (the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States) increased at an annual rate of 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001, according to preliminary estimates. In the third quarter, real GDP decreased 1.3 percent.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending February 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 378,000, an increase of 17,000 from the previous week's revised figure. The 4-week moving average was 373,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average.

Help-Wanted Index
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index was unchanged in January, still standing at 47. The Index was 77 one year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising rose in six of the nine U.S. regions. Largest increases occurred in the Mountain (23.8%) and East South Central (10.1%) regions. The steepest decline occurred in the Middle Atlantic (-6.0%) region.
