The Conference Board index increased one point in December. The index now stands at 46, up from 45 in November; it was 78 one year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in all nine U.S. regions. Steepest declines occurred in the East North Central (-19.7%), Middle Atlantic (-17.3%) and Mountain (-14.0%) regions.

TMP Worldwide saw its shares fall 6.7 percent ($2.85) to $39.72, after an article in Forbes magazine reported that TMP excluded substantial merger expenses from certain earnings reports in order "to make results shinier," raising questions about the company's accounting practices. In a letter to Forbes, Jim Treacy, president of TMP, demanded an immediate correction to fix the inaccuracies in the article.
